Dear friends of the theater,

103 years ago, Ida and Joseph Dondis looked at the ashes of the 1922 Rockland fire and saw an opportunity for our community. By February of 1923 they had built the theater, and the Strand’s marquee had taken its place as a landmark on Main Street. The Dondis family believed in the Rockland community and knew that its citizens would sustain a theater. In 2004, the Simmons family doubled down on that faith in Rockland and renovated the Strand into the theater we have today. As the non-profit stewards of the Strand Theatre, our organization knows and relies on the support of the greater Rockland community: a community that stands behind the arts, recognizes the value of independent movie theaters, and cherishes the shared experience of watching films and performances with an audience in a theater together. Your gift to this year’s annual appeal affirms your support and sustains the Strand Theatre.

The Strand entertains, and the Strand brings joy to audiences of all ages. In 2025, we curated programs that celebrate and engage our community on screen, on stage, and in deep partnership. We came together to talk about film, hear behind-the-scenes perspectives, and watch beloved classics and fresh new takes. On screen, we reveled in the power of the Metropolitan Opera, the beauty of Impressionism, and the cool familiarity of the Grateful Dead. Live dance took our breath away and we cheered musicians on stage from Maine and around the world. More than 5,400 children experienced the transformative power of the performing arts through our education program, free to them and at no cost to their schools. Our commitment to the midcoast is unwavering. Our spotlight and space amplify the missions of local non-profit organizations, bringing the community together to see, learn and experience the work of the non-profits that collaborate to strengthen Rockland and the midcoast.

The opportunities to come together in support of the arts at the Strand are vibrant and within reach, but we can’t bring them to our community without you.  As you make your annual gifts this year, know that a gift to the Strand is the continuation of a 100+ year commitment to the midcoast community. Your gift is entertainment, education, empowerment and joy.

Thank you for believing in the Strand and our community,

Anne Rogers-Popejoy
