About The Strand
The Strand Theatre, located in downtown Rockland on the coast of Maine, has been entertaining audiences since 1923. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the theater underwent an extensive renovation in 2005, which included new sound and projection equipment, a fully restored interior and exterior, and a bright new marquee. In 2014, the theater became a non-profit organization, and is now owned and operated by the Friends of the Strand Theatre. (click here to download our 2022 Annual Report) (click here to view our 990)
The Strand Theatre’s mission is: To entertain, engage, and empower our community, in our theater and beyond our walls.
Today, the Strand Theatre is a multi-use venue offering the best of current first-run and independent films, live musical concerts and comedy, simulcasts, educational programs, conferences, and other special events on our stage and screen.
ON SCREEN
Film: Our programming includes an on-going regular schedule of current first-release, independent, and documentary film titles. We also offer special film series, the occasional retrospective and classic film, film festivals, and special film events in conjunction with local organizations and partners including the The Camden International Film Festival, The Maine Jewish Film Festival, The Farnsworth Art Museum, and others.
HD Simulcasts: We present a variety of performances broadcast LIVE via satellite including The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD, the National Theatre of London, Exhibition on Screen, and more.
At the Strand, seeing a movie is also about the experience. We present movies the way they were meant to be seen... on The Big Screen and in the restored beauty of a 1923 classic movie-house. The theater is equipped with state-of-the art projection and Dolby-digital surround sound, and our trained projectionists take great care to give our audience the best movie-going experience possible. Closed captioning and visual-impairment assist devices are available, for the films that are formatted with that technology, to offer a better experience for patrons that are deaf or hard of hearing, or are blind or have low vision. In addition, our concession staff pops some of the best popcorn around!
