STRAND YOUTH FILM FEST

Deadlines for Entries: October 31, 2021

The Strand Theatre's second annual STRAND YOUTH FILM FEST is an opportunity for young people living in the midcoast Maine area to create and submit their own short films!

Entries for the SYFF 2021 will be accepted from June through October, with awards and a public presentation of the films in November 2021. Prizes will be awarded from a panel of judges, made up of Strand staff and local film professionals.

ENTRY RULES

  1. All filmmakers must be 9-18 years old. Participants must live in Midcoast Maine and surrounding areas, including Knox, Waldo, Lincoln, Hancock, Kennebec, Penobscot, and Sagadahoc counties.

  1. Filmmakers will be split into two divisions:

    1. Junior (ages 9-13)

    2. Senior (ages 14-18)

  1. Films must be 1-5 minutes long and follow a G or PG rating.

  1. Films must be entered into one of the following categories:

    1. Narrative (fiction)

    2. Documentary

    3. Music Video

    4. Animation

  1. Prizes will be awarded in each film category for both divisions, plus one “Best of Fest” prize. Judges will consider:

    1. Screenwriting (script and story)

    2. Cinematography (camera work)

    3. Editing (post production)

    4. Overall Creativity

  1. Films must be submitted in .mov or .mp4 format. Note that most smartphone and tablet videos follow these formats.

  1. Only one film per submitter is permitted.

  1. By submitting a film, you agree to having guardian permission from each participant to show your work to a public audience.

JUNE 1, 2021: Applications Open

OCOTBER 31, 2021: Applications Close (at midnight)

NOVEMBER 2021: Award Announcement and Public Presentation (exact date/time TBD)

 

PRIZES

The top film in each category, for both Junior and Senior divisions, will win a cash prize of $75. A “Best of Fest” accolade will also be awarded for each division, winning a $100 cash prize. All winners will receive an official Strand Youth Film Fest Geiger Award trophy. Please note that each film can only win one award, meaning the film designated as “Best of Fest” will not win the best of their category.
