Contemporary Pop/Folk
8:00PM
In a career that spans over fifteen years, soulful singer-songwriter Joan Osborne has proven to be an artistically restless yet consistently enthralling performer who has made a career performing an eclectic mix of original tunes and covers, while developing a bluesy and intimate pop style all her own, and playing stages from The Grand Ole Opry to Lilith Fair. Her 1995 release Relish, which spawned the pop-oriented, spiritually ambiguous mega-hit "One of Us" earned eight Grammy nominations, and catapulted her into national stardom.
For this current tour, Osborne will appear as a duo with pianist Keith Cotton. According to Osborne, the idea for this first ever stripped down tour evolved after she and Keith played together on a show for WXPN radio in Philadelphia. Afterward, Osborne and Keith agreed that it was very interesting to hear the songs in a very bare-bones fashion, and the idea for this tour was born. “The songs we will do will be drawn from my studio albums and live recordings, says Joan, “along with some special only-on-this-tour covers thrown in (any fan requests will be considered), plus some sneak peeks at new material from an album in the works”. Osborne’s appearance at the Strand will give fans the opportunity to hear her perform in a small and intimate concert setting.
Osborne's diverse repertoire encompasses a nuanced collection of songs steeped in soul, country and blues. In 2002, Osborne cemented her reputation as a top tier soul singer with an incredible turn in the acclaimed documentary film 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown,' followed by a tour with legendary Motown backing band The Funk Brothers. She and her band accompanied the Dixie Chicks for a national tour in the summer of 2003, during which time she also joined veteran San Francisco jam-rockers The Dead as a vocalist, and released her fourth album, titled How Sweet It Is, a collection of classic rock and soul covers. Osborne loves to sing and perform in many different genres, but on her latest release she returns to her soulful rock roots. "Little Wild One" reunites her with the Grammy All-Star team of Rick Chertoff, Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian who produced her breakthrough, debut album 'Relish’.
